How Can You Tell Whether an Ultrasound Image Was Enhanced With AI?

Some AI edits are obvious, while others make subtle changes to facial features, texture, and shadows. Here are a few clues that should prompt you to ask questions:

Dramatic contrast or shading:

Strong shadows can make a face appear more sculpted.

Look Closely at the Eyes

The eye area can be a clue when an ultrasound image has been enhanced with AI. Look for photographic details such as individual eyelashes or sharply drawn eyelids

Heavy outlines: Strong, almost drawn-looking borders around the head, arms, and legs.

The baby looks like a newborn photograph: Photographic skin, delicate eyelashes, fine hair, and lifelike eyes deserve clarification when an image is advertised as a result you’ll see during your ultrasound.

Side-by-Side: Original 3D Ultrasound vs. Post-AI Editing

In our comparison image, the original 3D ultrasound appears on the left, and the version labeled “AI Generated” appears on the right. The differences are subtle, but you can see changes in facial definition, texture, and shading.

Why AI Editing in Ultrasound Advertising Matters

AI can transform an ultrasound image into a more detailed, lifelike portrait. But that edited portrait isn’t necessarily what you’ll see on the ultrasound screen during your appointment.

When an AI-enhanced image is advertised without a clear explanation, families may expect a level of detail that the scan itself cannot provide. Your baby’s actual ultrasound may have softer features, shadows, or areas hidden by a little hand and those are normal parts of ultrasound imaging.

You deserve to know whether you’re looking at an image captured by an ultrasound machine or an interpretation created afterward on a computer.

Why Might an Ultrasound Studio Use AI in Its Advertising?

Sometimes, an ultrasound image gets a digital glow-up instead of the equipment getting an upgrade! Studios with older machines may turn to AI to compete with newer technology. Others may use AI editing to compensate for image optimization challenges or because they aren’t confident sharing their original scans. These are possible reasons. We can’t know a studio’s equipment, skills, morals or intentions from an advertisement alone.

When edited or AI images are presented as standard scan results, they can get families in the door with expectations the studio may struggle to meet.

At Itty Bitty Ultrasounds, our goal goes beyond getting you in the door, we want you leaving satisfied, excited to return, and confident that you can expect the same quality of care and skilled imaging at your next visit. We invest in our equipment, refine our settings, and rely on our trained, registered sonographers to capture images we’re proud to share.

No digital disguise needed. Just our machine, our skills, and your sweet little baby.

Our Images Start With Skilled Sonographers

Every ultrasound sonographer at Itty Bitty Ultrasounds has a degree in diagnostic medical sonography. Their education includes ultrasound physics, equipment operation, and techniques for optimizing images. Beautiful ultrasound imaging takes more than pressing a button. It takes understanding how to adjust the machine’s settings, work with baby’s position, and capture the best views available. We are confident in our training, experience, and imaging skills. We rely on those skills to create our standard ultrasound images.

What Can You Expect at Your Appointment?

Our standard advertised images represent the type of imaging we offer, although every baby’s views will be different. Image quality varies with baby’s position, gestational age, fluid around the face, and anything covering those sweet features. Sometimes we capture a beautiful face. Sometimes baby insists on keeping a hand in front of it! Our goal is to capture the best images possible while being honest about what ultrasound can show.

The standard ultrasound images we advertise come from the same machine and team you’ll experience in our studio.

Is 5D Ultrasound the Same as AI Editing?

No. What many studios call “5D” typically refers to advanced 3D rendering with lighting and shading that gives the image more depth and a lifelike appearance. Ultrasound systems can produce these effects using the ultrasound data itself. That differs from using generative AI afterward to reimagine a baby’s face. A realistic-looking ultrasound isn’t automatically AI-edited. Lighting, contrast, and rendering settings can all influence its appearance.

What About Our 8K AI Enhancement?

We offer one optional AI enhancement called 8K, created by a professional third-party service using an ultrasound image from your session. This enhancement creates a hyperrealistic artistic interpretation of your baby’s face. It is not a live ultrasound image, a diagnostic image, or a guarantee of exactly how your baby will look at birth. Whenever we advertise or share an 8K AI-enhanced image, we clearly identify it so you can distinguish it from our standard ultrasound imaging.

What Can You Expect at Your Appointment?

The images we advertise represent the imaging we offer, although every baby brings their own personality and pose preferences! Image quality varies with baby’s position, gestational age, fluid around the face, and anything covering those sweet features.

Sometimes baby is ready for their close-up. Other times, a little hand or foot steals the spotlight! If your baby is feeling camera-shy, selected packages, including our 3D Signature package, include unlimited complimentary redos at your sonographer’s discretion so we can try again for those precious views.

Our goal is to capture the best images possible while being honest about what ultrasound can show. The standard ultrasound images we advertise come from the same machine and team you’ll experience in our studio. At Itty Bitty Ultrasounds, we want you coming in excited, leaving satisfied, and looking forward to seeing us again.

No AI disguise, no borrowed pictures, just skilled sonographers, authentic imaging, and your itty bitty star of the show!
