During my schooling in my sonography program, we not only had to know how to preform these ultrasounds at an advance level, but the entire physics of how ultrasound is even created! Having that foundation makes it so much easier to explain the difference between 3D, 4D, and 5D imaging. Understanding the difference between these imaging types can help you choose the best experience for you and your baby, so lets begin! lets dive into it!
2D ULTRASOUND
To know how 3D ultrasound and 4D ultrasound work, we must first understand the basics with 2D ultrasounds. 2D sonographic images are created based on how sound waves travel through different tissues and how they reflect back to the probe. These reflections depend on something called acoustic impedance, which is influenced by both the tissue’s density and the speed at which sound travels through it. Differences in these properties are what allow us to see structures like your baby, fluid, and organs in real time. These differences in tissue properties are translated into a grayscale image on the screen. Areas that reflect more sound waves appear brighter, while areas with less reflection appear darker. This is how we’re able to clearly tell the difference between fluid, soft tissue, and your baby’s organs in real time. This safe, non-invasive imaging method is the primary way to monitor and view your baby throughout your pregnancy journey.
3D ULTRASOUND
Instead of capturing a single flat image like traditional 2D ultrasound, 3D imaging is created by sending multiple sound waves across the area of interest. The system then captures hundreds of thin grayscale image slices from different angles and combines them into a volume-based, three-dimensional image view of your baby’s features. This will create depth to your baby's face and bring those features to life.
4D ULTRASOUND
4D ultrasound builds directly on 3D imaging by adding the dimension of time, allowing us to see movement in real time. While 3D ultrasound creates a single still image from a volume of data, 4D ultrasound continuously captures and updates that volume, creating a live, moving image of your baby. Instead of collecting just one volume dataset like in 3D imaging, the transducer rapidly acquires multiple volume datasets per second and displays them in sequence. Similar to frames in a video.
One of the most important factors in 4D ultrasound is temporal resolution, also known as frame rate. Higher frame rates will produce smoother, more lifelike motion. While lower lower frame rates will create a more choppy or delayed movement. 5D ULTRASOUND
An important note on 5D ultrasound (HD LIVE): Your baby is never seen in just “5D” alone. HD (5D) is layered onto 3D or 4D imaging, so what you’re actually seeing is 3D/HD or 4D/HD. 5D ultrasound enhances the image by adding natural skin tones, light, and depth, transforming that classic “gold” appearance into a more realistic, sharper, and lifelike view of your baby with greater clarity and precision.
